Calls upon the FBI and Dept. of Justice to urgently act upon the same

Washington DC, March 07, 2013: The U.S. India Political Action Committee (USINPAC) strongly supports Rep. Crowley and Sen. Dick Durbin’s appeal to the U.S. Department of Justice and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to modify their Hate Crime Incident Reporting Form to allow for better information gathering about Sikhs and Hindus. A letter has been submitted by 26 Senators and 40 Representatives to the two agencies in an effort to improve tracking of hate crimes against these two groups.

In recent months there have been several incidents of hate crimes against South Asians including the shooting at the Gurudwara in Oak Creek, WI. Reiterating his commitment to supporting all efforts to end hate crime USINPAC Chairman, Mr. Sanjay Puri said, “We notice that Indian-Americans, mostly Sikhs have increasingly fallen target to hate-crimes in the post 9/11 era. There is a lack of awareness about Sikhism and there is an urgent need to educate the people about this peace loving religion and people. Better reporting and tracking would also help frame better policies for our community.”
