Jaitley Welcomed to the United States By lawmakers on Capitol Hill
June 23, 2011, Washington D.C.: The U.S. India Political Action Committee (USINPAC) has welcomed the visit of Mr. Arun Jaitley to the U.S., the first after he took over as the leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha. Mr. Jaitley was accompanied by Lok Sabha Member of Parliament Mr. Janardhan Swamy and former Rajya Sabha member Mr. Chandan Mitra during this visit to Washington, D.C.
Mr. Arun Jaitley met with leading members of the Congress, think tanks, and key members of the administration during his official trip to the U.S. from June 22 – June 24. He started his visit in D.C. with an address at the Heritage Foundation on: “Indian Foreign Policy – Priorities in a Shifting Global Landscape”. Mr. Jaitley subsequently interacted with prominent lawmakers at the Hill including Congressman Steve Chabot, Faleomavaega, Howard Berman, Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, Senator Joe Lieberman, Senator Richard Lugar, and Senator Heller. Mr. Jaitley stressed on the growing strength of the U.S. India relationship and its strategic nature. He also talked about the convergence on various issues between the two countries especially relating to terrorism and growth of trade.
The Co-chairs of the India Caucus in the U.S. Congress: Congressmen Joe Crowley and Congressman Ed Royce held a reception on behalf of the Caucus for Mr. Jaitley in the Rayburn Congressional Building. Representative Crowley welcomed Mr. Jaitley, highlighting the importance of Indo-U.S. relations in the fast-changing global marketplace: “Mr. Jaitley’s visit represents a great opportunity for the U.S. to continue building a strong relationship with India. In an increasingly globalized economy, it is important for the U.S. to continue to foster friendship with India, which is emerging as a leading growth economy despite the difficult economic landscape.” Congressman Ed Royce too praised the economic growth of India and hoped that the relations between the two countries would continue to strengthen. He pointed out how important it is for both the countries to work together as both of them have several common values.
The Congressional India Caucus event was attended by Congressmen Joe Crowley, Joe Wilson, Ed Royce, Hansen Clarke, and Congresswomen Corrine Brown and Judy Chu, Co-chair of the Asia-Pacific Caucus.
Sanjay Puri, Chairman, USINPAC introduced Mr. Arun Jaitley in the Congressional Caucus reception. He said, “Mr. Jaitley is a senior and respected Indian politician who had been Minister of Law & Justice, Minister of Shipping, and Minister of Commerce and Industries.” Mr. Puri hoped that Mr. Jaitley’s visit would further strengthen the growing bond of friendship and trade between the two countries.
